El Cerrito Police lose star K-9

EL Cerrito Police Mourn the Loss of K-9 King

On February 10, 2012, El Cerrito Police K-9 King died while off-duty. His partner, Officer Joshua Del Prado and other members of the El Cerrito Police Department were by his side at the time of death.

Officer Del Prado took King to the veterinarian because he was showing signs of physical distress. King underwent emergency surgery and it was determined that he was suffering from catastrophic internal damage due to an intestinal torsion and his condition was not survivable. King was previously physically sound.

King was ECPD’s first K-9 and he was purchased with money raised through fundraising efforts of the El Cerrito Police Employees Association as well as through community donations.

King joined the force in late 2010. King was trained in handler protection and person searches. During his short career, King was responsible for tracking and locating an elderly Alzheimer’s patient who wandered away from his home as well as suspects attempting to elude capture.

Officer Del Prado and King also made appearances at several community events and participated in regional Police K-9 trainings with other K-9 teams from the greater Bay Area.

The El Cerrito Police Employees Association / K-9 Association is currently accepting donations which will be applied towards the purchase and training of another K-9.

1st Choice FCU currently has branches is Castro Valley and San Leandro, CA and its membership is comprised of hospital staff in the East Bay.

SFPCU is deeply saddened by the tragic event that took place on March 31st, and we send our well wishes to Bryan Stow, his family and friends. Bryan Stow is a Santa Clara County AMR Paramedic who was in a medically induced coma for months after being assaulted at a Giants-Dodgers game in Los Angeles, CA.

I am writing to you today to update you and ask for your action on the Debit Interchange Fee Study Act (S.575).

What is the Issue and How Does This Affect Me?

At a recent Congressional hearing, Members of Congress noted that the Restoring American Financial Stability Act (S.3217), the ruling that the U.S. Senate passed in May 2010, would need more study. The Senate and House introduced the Debit Interchange Fee Study Act (S.575) and Consumers Payment System Protection Act (H.R. 1081), bills which would delay implementation of the Federal Reserve’s debit interchange rule and study its implications to consumers before proceeding.

The action we are asking from you today is to urge your representative to help pass the S. 575/H.R. 1081 - The Debit Interchange Fee Study Act.

The interchange income they are studying is used by the credit union to support the competitive rates, ATM rebate program and services we provide back to you. Additionally, it helps us to be able to offer you no annual or monthly fees, no balance transfer fees, no cash advance fees, competitive rates, and more on your credit card.

How You Can Help

Please join us in sending a message to your elected officials urging them to support the S. 575/H.R. 1081 - The Debit Interchange Fee Study Act which would delay the passing of S.3217.

You can send a pre-written personalized letter to your government representatives at the Connect for the Cause website. Connect for the Cause is an advocacy network that allows you to inform elected officials about credit union issues. As part of the SF Police Credit Union’s Employee Recognition Program, Recognizing U, the Credit Union established an award in the name of Margaret Mahony. Many of you remember first hand the quality service Margaret provided to our valued members in her 35-year career with the Credit Union. Margaret retired in 2007, imparting a legacy of dedication and integrity for her co-workers to follow. The award was given to the employee who received the highest Service Promise rating within 2009.

Shredding Day for Members!

If you have old financial records and confidential documents taking up space at your home, you can securely dispose of them with the help of SFPCU. Once again, SFPCU is sponsoring a “Shred Your Records Day” to help you clean house.

Stop by our Irving Street Branch (2550 Irving Street, San Francisco, CA 94122) on Saturday, November 3rd, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., to have your documents safely destroyed by a certified shredding service!

Please note: Each member may shred up to three medium-sized moving boxes of documents. Please make sure your shredding is free of batteries, binders, books, binder clips or any other metal object that may damage or jam the shredder. (You do not need to remove staples or paper clips and can include credit cards and plastic window envelopes with your documents to be shredded).

Annual Election Results

This year we held our annual election by mail and online. The election was a great success, showing a clear demonstration of how much our members care about our credit union.

Your 2012 elected Supervisory Committee member is Barbara Brewster (Incumbent).

There was no election held for the Board of Directors since the number of nominees was equal to the number of vacancies. Mike Hebel and John Mindermann will each be serving for a three-year term on the Board of Directors. Barbara Brewster will also be serving a three-year term on the Supervisory Committee.

Thanks go to the Board of Directors, Supervisory Committee and all of the SFPCU staff who worked hard to make this election a success.
